Five Cases of the Free and Pedicle Graft in Atrophic Rhinitis

Abstract

|
|
Though several methods on treatment of the atrophic rhinitis were reported and many different procedures have been tried in surgical method, no excellent results were reported.
Recently, we performed 2 cases of the pedicle graft and 3 cases of the free graft in the atrophic rhinitis. The method and results of the above operation are presented.
1) In the pedicle graft, the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus was transplanted to the atrophied turbinate through the antro-nasal opening, not the maxillary natural opening.
2) In the free graft, the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus was elevated and removed and grafted on the atrophied turbinate.
3) The operative technic of the free graft is rather simple than of the pedicle graft.
4) In 4 cases whose chief complaints were subsided and the nasal cavity was narrowed almost as much as normal nasal cavity.
5) In one free graft case, the atrophic change of the transplanted mucous membrane and crust formation were recurred.
